The Argumentative Function of Folk Proverbs in Narrative Discourse: The Example Of ‘Ladies of the Moon’ by Jokha Al-Harthy

This study examines the argumentative techniques that the narrator uses to change the recipients' beliefs and convey his message during the communication process. These techniques, which include references, phrases, or arguments, are means of persuasion often used in argumentative discourse. 

It can be said that the folk proverb differs from other forms of expression in formal literature in that it accurately expresses the true and philosophical ideas of a nation through its empirical approach. Thus, folk proverbs include models of high argumentative value which must be studied.

This study explores the forms of folk proverbs and their role in shaping narrative discourse in the novel Ladies of the Moon by the renowned Omani novelist Jokha Al-Harthy. The use of folk proverbs in this novel increased its persuasiveness and created a fusion of reality and history. Through this implementation of proverbs, Jokha Al-Harthy managed to established an authentic genre in the Arabian Gulf region.
